SEEING NUMBERS
reviewed in Teaching Children Mathematics, October 1996

Seeing Numbers really motivates teens and preteens with its MTV-style production. The videotape set does not teach specific how-to's but rather covers the importance of numbers and how they relate to everyday situations--for example, the chance of winning the lottery or being injured in a plane crash; and the differences among square, cubic, triangular, hexagonal, and other "personalities" of numbers. Scientific notation is also discussed, along with why ten is the base for our current number system. The differences among precise, accurate, and approximate numbers are also mentioned. This very fascinating videotape will definitely keep teens' attention while they learn quite a bit about the importance of numbers on a higher level. The Teacher Resource Guide and the two numbers posters and charts add depth as the concepts are explained. The students can practice actual problems dealing with the subjects discussed in the videotape. The set is extremely motivating, interesting, and well done!
